I'M BAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!

Miss me? Don't lie.

Stockholm Fashion Week ended yesterday, and one of the shows I took in was altewai.saome. I fell in love with their designs late last fall, so I was pretty excited to catch this show.

Overall I'm not really sure what to think about the designs. Some were beautiful, but I am probably one of the few who actually go to a fashion show looking for pieces I can actually wear. One thing is for certain though, I will not be sporting the ovenmitt-esq gloves that appeared to be adorned with computer circuit boards.

I'll leave you with some pictures. Gonna be totally straight with you, I need to work on my photography. Just because you own a DSLR does not mean you have instant photo-cred. Case in point—my pictures. Snapping models sashaying down the runway is serious business!

Anyway, looking forward to getting reacquainted with you all!

THAT 70S SHOW

Image via The Sartorialist
In early September, at the beginning of New York Fashion Week, Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) snapped this picture, and then asked the question "so what is more important, fashion or style?" He then stated that although he knew seasonal trends, the young lady pictured above didn't really fit into any of those forecasts, yet she really stood out from the rest of the "fashion pack."

But oh, how wrong he was.

I suppose it's not Schuman's fault. How was he supposed to know that designers-a-plenty would be sending a flood of 70s inspired clothing down the runways for Spring. If anything, this young lady is right on target for Spring's 70s explosion—and I love it.

I'd be lying if I said that the late 60s and early 70s weren't a big inspiration to me. I grew up listening to the music of that era (thanks to Mom and Dad), and I'm a firm believer that that era (particularly the years between 1965 and 1975) was the greatest era for music the world has, and will ever see again (but this is for another discussion). Often times I imagine what it would have been like to live through the kind of change that swept through the United States (and other parts of the world) during that time period—and of course my dad's crazy stories about growing up then only add fuel to the fire.

Suffice it to say, I was pleasantly surprised to see so much 70s inspiration on the catwalks for Spring 2011. From flower child to Studio 54 diva, the evidence was everywhere.

Derek Lam S/S 2011
For Spring 2011, Derek Lam looked west—California to be exact. There was lots of denim, longer hemlines (a trend many designers are adapting for the upcoming season) and flared trousers that would look perfectly at home on Ali MacGraw or Joni Mitchell.

Marc Jacobs S/S 2011
Donna Summers, is that you? At Marc Jacob's Spring 2011 show, inspiration was found not on the west coast, but on that other coast—in New York City discotheques to be exact. Think big hair, floppy hats, slinky satiny dresses and again, the flared-leg trouser.

Yves Saint Laurent S/S 2011
A trip back to the 70s would not be complete without mentioning the decade's star designer—Yves Saint Laurent. It was no surprise that the massive Saint Laurent exhibition shown in Paris early this year would make it's presence felt on the runways for Spring 2011—and the YSL show was no exception. Stefano Pilati, having all the YSL archives at his disposal, harkened back to an era where Le Smoking and the peasant blouse ruled women's wardrobes. Whether this collection will make enough of an impact to allow Pilati to remain head designer for the venerable house remains to be seen, but I for one know I'll be dreaming about owning one of these jumpsuits for quite some time.

FRONT ROW, HOPE S/S 2011

Came across this picture today on the blog 5 inch and up. It was taken at the Hope S/S 2011 show during Stockholm Fashion Week. In the front row there is Andy Torres of Style Scrapbook, Hanneli Mustaparta, and then me hiding next to the unknown guy in the grey shirt! How fun!

The New York Times ran a great article today discussing the dilemma designers and publicists are facing deciding who will be sitting front row for the upcoming New York Fashion Week. Lots of insidery info on the musical chairs game currently being played by the old guard magazine editors and the new media (bloggers). Check it out!

Nina Jarebrink SS11

Nina Jarebrink SS11 offered a bit of diversity, and could basically be broken down into three parts. The first set of looks were very neutral-toned, with clothes in shades of black and what looked like camel. Towards the middle of the show the theme shifted towards nautical/military which was so popular this past spring and summer. Near the end of the collection the theme shifted once again to a more beachy tone, with shades of white and orange/peach being the primary colors used.

Overall I could see myself getting a couple pieces, including one of the white skirts and perhaps one of the navy blazers. I particularly liked the styling of the oversized navy blazer with orange platforms. I will definitely be trying that color combination in the future.

Here are some of my favorite pictures that I took while at the show. For those of you who follow fashion blogs you may recognize a couple "famous" bloggers in some of the photos—namely BryanBoy, Rumi Neely and Andy Torres from Style Scrapbook.

I'll be posting a longer write up at Runway Passport that should be up sometime next week.

Hope SS2011

Hope is a Swedish label created and run by the designers Ann Ringstrand and Stefan Söderberg—and after seeing this show—are one of my new favorite labels. OK, so some of the looks are a bit reminiscent of Celine SS10, but that's probably why I like it so much! I guess you can call me a sucker for neutral colors and wonderfully crafted leather shirts and skirts. This collection is a proud representation of what Scandinavian fashion is all about—bold yet minimalist designs (if that even makes sense!).

Of course, my favorite item from the collection had to have been the shoes. Whether they were the "Celine inspired" platforms or the wedges wrapped in leather and other materials, they were they absolute stand-out for me.

Fashion Week: Day Two

What a day! I just got home after spending the last ten hours or so viewing fashion shows, walking to fashion shows, walking to more fashion shows (you get the idea). All I want to do is collapse in my head (makeup, clothes and all), yet I feel like I have to write down at least some of my initial thoughts from today's shows.

First and foremost, I want to thank all the designers who invited me to their viewings. I will post a link to each of the designers, so please, if you have the time please check them out! Second, I will soon be updating Runway Passport with lots of pictures and musings about the shows—along with a Stockholm city guide—so be sure to head over there.

Although my brain is buzzing with creativity my body is absolutely aching from walking around Stockholm in heels today (Acne, of course), and the thought of getting up to do it again already is making my feet hurt, so I will have to save most of my posting for Thursday. Until then, here are a few pictures from today and links to some of the designers I viewed. All photos shot by me.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Right now I'm a little busy RSVPing to some invites I received for Stockholm Fashion Week (now Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) and I'm really excited. This will be my first fashion week not only in Stockholm, but anywhere. I've got about twelve invites to go through and I'm not really sure how I'm going to attend them all (I still have a 9 to 5 job I need to work around).

Anyway, there should be some great material here in the next week or so. Also, I'll be blogging for Runway Passport so be sure to check out their website as well.

XO,

Andie
